Welcome to MCA! My name is Miranda Carter and I will be your child’s teacher this school year, along with my assistant Margot Smith. I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer! The first day of school this year is a Half Day. The school hours are 7:30-1:00 p.m. Little Saints Preschool is part of Mother Catherine Academy. We ask for your child to arrive on time everyday so that they do not miss any important instruction. Educational Philosophy: As educators of young children, it is our goal to instruct the whole child. Through play, developmentally appropriate curriculum and project based learning we will strive to develop each student’s sense of self, community, God and family. Also, it is our goal to help each child develop their skills in all the major developmental areas including fine and gross motor, reading, writing, math and science. Important Reminders: In the lower grades we have several children who have severe nut allergies. Something as innocent as exposure to nut vapors can sometimes trigger a severe allergic reaction! Therefore, grades Pre-k through 2nd Grade have adopted a peanut and tree nut free environment policy for the school year. It is important that classroom snacks and lunches be free of all nuts and/or nut products. Examples of items containing nut products include, but are not limited to, peanut butter, almond butter, Nutella, peanut butter crackers, trail mix, many granola bars etc. Alternative nut free options include fruit, vegetables, plain or cheese crackers, cheese sticks, etc. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated as it is our goal to provide a safe environment for all of our students. If you have any questions about an item you would like to pack for your child, please do not hesitate to contact me. Every day we have snack time we ask that you bring in a healthy snack for your child to eat. We will offer milk to each child unless they have an allergy. Healthy snacks include: pretzels, yogurt, fruit, vegetables, and graham crackers just to name a few. Every day, your child will bring home their Daily Communication Binder. This will contain any completed work we are ready to send home, documentation of your child’s behavior (explained in detail later in the packet) and any other pertinent communication. Please sign and return this folder in your child’s book bag each day. Every Wednesday, the oldest MCA child in each family will be bringing home a school folder known as the “Wednesday Folder” containing important notices and forms that must be completed and returned to school. Please return any papers and the Wednesday Folder the next day. However, please keep any notes for me separately in your child’s blue Daily Communication folder. Class Dojo This year, grades Pre-K through 2nd Grade have adopted the Class Dojo Program. This program is a points based system that allows children to earn or lose points based upon their behavior. This information is shared with you in real time on the Dojo app or website. Each child has their own individual code and only you and the teacher can see your child’s profile and what points they have earned or lost. At the end of each day, children who earn 90% or higher of positive points will receive a sticker to place on his daily chart. Children who collect at least 4 stickers each week will be able to choose from the treasure box on Friday. It is our expectation that all our students will achieve this goal, and we are here to help them do it! You will receive an invitation to join our Class Dojo page and access your child’s profile tonight at open house. Again, if you have any further questions of how this program works, feel free to contact me. Here are a few reminders to help get the school year off to a smooth start. Our special schedule is as follows: Ms. Carter’s Little Saints: Monday – Music Tuesday –Computer Wednesday – Library Thursday – P.E (Gym Uniform and Tennis Shoes) Friday - Art Please label everything with your child’s name to keep our Lost and Found items at a minimum: lunches, backpacks, jackets, sweatshirts, and extra clothes etc. Also, if your child’s jacket has a small chain or loop sewn on the inside, it remains on the coatroom hooks much easier. In light of all warnings regarding drawstrings in clothing items, such as hoods, it is best to remove those to avoid any entanglement on playground equipment. Thank you! If your child is going to be absent, please call the school, and let us know. When your child returns to school, please send in a note with an explanation of the absence. This is a school policy. Please note that children are not allowed to ride on a different bus to go to a friend’s house after school unless special emergency arrangements have been made and verified through MCA. If your child is not going to take his or her scheduled bus home, or there is some other change in the usual manner in which your child is to be dismissed, please send in a note to inform us of the change that morning. Please be sure to date the note. This way, our signals will not get crossed. If you have any questions, or you feel there is anything I should know, please feel free to send a note with your child, or you may call the school and leave a message for me to call you. My school e-mail address is email@example.com and my website is mcamcarter.weebly.com. I am looking forward to a great year with your child! Sincerely, Ms. Carter
